Lighting should not obstruct the view across the kitchen when sitting or standing, so measuring is the most important part of the process! Lights should hang 30-36 inches from the countertop with 11-12 inches of space from each edge of the island. Pendant lights should be spaced 26-30 inches apart. A good way to visualize spacing and how much space the light will take up is to hang a piece of paper or a balloon from a string taped to the ceiling.
