Dutch Door and Aluminum Awning Installation

|

Hello and welcome to the blog!!! Today I am sharing a fun Diy project I did with my Uncle recently. We installed a new Iron Dutch Door from Pinkys Iron Doors, and new aluminum awning from Design your Awning. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about this project!! So let’s get to it!

As usual before we can get to the pretty pictures we have to take a look back at where we started. Now while my previous front door was not awful, it had some faults. The biggest fault was that there was no protection above the door protecting it from the elements. The door got hit with the hot sun for most of the day and when it rained it got soaked! Since it had no protection water got into the house and caused damage to my wood floors.

Not to mention the look of the door was just basic. It’s a standard tract home front door. Nothing special about it. I have dreamed of having a dutch door for so many years! I just love the look and character of a dutch door. I always thought dutch doors were out of my price range, especially an iron dutch door. That was until I found Pinky’s Iron Doors

Pinky’s Iron Doors has the best prices! Not only is their pricing amazing but their doors are too. The Pinky’s team is extremely helpful and very hands on. I was lucky enough to visit their warehouse in Los Angeles California. Let me tell you it is a beautiful building and super cool! The warehouse is open to the public, so if you’re local you should stop by! They have several designs on

All Pinky’s Iron Doors Come pre hung, meaning they come with the frame. Which is nice because you don’t have to build a new frame yourself. So the first thing you need to do is remove the old frame so you can install the new one.

With the old frame removed, you can install the new frame. Pinky’s Iron Doors gives you all you need to install your new door, including the lag bolts to secure the new frame. Just make sure your frame is plum and level! The frame also includes the welded threshold so it’s all one piece and it’s perfectly square.

One of the many things I love about my new Dutch Door are the hinges! Not only are they beautiful, but they are easy to use. You just need to set the  door onto the hinges! No hammering in a little piece into the hinges! Each hinge can hold up to 1,000 pounds! All of Pinky’s Iron Doors are foam insulated and painted including a clear coat. This door is made to last!

Once the frame and door are installed and everything is level and working well, you’ll need to add foam insulation all around the frame. Just to help insure weather protection. Pinky’s Iron Doors all come with weather striping and a bottom swipe, so you can rest assured your door is water tight! The quality of Pinky’s Iron Doors is unbeatable. They pay attention to every detail and each door is thoroughly inspected.

Eek the Dutch Door is starting to really take shape! At this point I believe I was actually jumping up and down! My Uncle installed new trim around the door. I went with a nice wide trim with no detail.

I love that the Dutch Door has the option to just open the upper window. So if you would like a nice breeze , but not have your upper door open, this is a great option. The Dutch Door comes with optimal dual pained tempered glass. I went with the clear Low-E glass, but Pinky’s has other options to choose from. The glass also has weather stripping all around it.

With the Dutch Door installed it was time to move on to the Awning from Design Your Awning!! Working with Design Your Awning was an absolute pleasure! I honestly was blown away by their level of customer service.  I worked closely with the owner Kenneth Cannon and he could’t have been more helpful! I simply sent a couple of photos of my front door and Design Your Awning designed an awning for me!

Design your Awning then sent me renderings of the Awning and the measurements. It was such an easy process. They have people who will walk you through the entire process and help you choose the right awning for you.

Design Your Awning has a large selection of awning Styles to choose from. I chose the Juliet style Awning. I loved the simplicity of it. You can also add scrolls to your awning which give the awning a nice touch. Design Your Awning has two choices to choose from. You can choose either Copper or colored aluminum awnings.

Each awning from Design Your Awning comes with an excellent warranty. So you can rest easy that your awning is made to last. Each awning is also made proudly in Louisiana.

One of the many things that I love about Design Your Awning is that your awning ships for free right to your door! It comes very well wrapped and protected. I just love the idea that you can order your awning all online and have it delivered to your door step!

When you are ready to install your new awning you will find a full set of instructions included! The instructions walk you through the entire installation process. Design Your Awning also includes all the screws, hooks, silicone and even the drill bits you will need to use!! How’s that for full service!

The first thing my Uncle did was draw out where the screws for the hooks needed to go. He then drilled the holes for the screws. Thankfully our holes lined up with the studs, but if your holes don’t Design Your Awning also includes wall anchors you can use.

My Uncle then installed the hooks for the Awning to sit on. Since the awning is made out of aluminum it is light weight and easy to handle.

After you have placed the Awning on the hooks you can easily move it around until you have it in the exact spot you want. Once in the desired location you can continue to add screws to the pre drilled holes.

And there you go! She is a beauty!! The thought of finally having my door protected from weather is so exciting!! My Uncle said that installing the Design Your Awning awning was one of the easiest Diy projects he has done! Design Your Awning makes the installation process extremely user friendly.

The last step of installing your awning is to seal the edges with silicone, which Design Your Awning includes. This will help keep your awning water tight! Right after we installed the awning we had a big thunder storm with lots of rain. I kept opening the front door because I could do so without getting soaked!! I kept showing my husband that I could stay dry with the door open! This is something I had not experienced since living in this home! Thanks to Design Your Awning I could finally open my front door while it was raining and not get wet, or have a ton of water come into my house!  This awning seriously is life chaining for me!

Here is my new Dutch Door and Awning in all their glory!! Can you believe the transformation!! Not only did the new dutch door and awning make my entry beautiful, but they increased the value of my home. An Iron Dutch Door is a major upgrade to any home and so is an Aluminum Awning. You will get your return on investment and then some!

Is there anything more charming than a Dutch Door!!! It has added so much character to my house. Everyone who comes over compliments the door. Im so excited that I can have the upper portion of the door open to bring in a nice breeze. Plus having the glass has added so much light to my entry. I think every home deserves an Iron Dutch Door from Pinky’s Iron Doors!
