Modern Farmhouse Home Renovation

|

Hello and welcome to my website!! I’m so glad you stopped by. I thought it would be fitting to have my first blog post be about our BIG renovation on our current home. So here’s a little bit more about this giant undertaking and how it all turned out. I will share another post all about the backyard renovation soon, since that was another big project.

So here’s how it all began. My husband and I had been looking to move for quite a while. We wanted to have a bigger yard for our three growing children. I happened to be on a walk and saw a house for sale in our current neighborhood that was at the end of a cul-de-sac. I was instantly intrigued because being at the end of a cul-de-sac has been a dream of ours since having kids. So I ran, ok I walked, home and told my husband, who is a real estate broker, to look the house up on the multiple listings site. He did and it was in our price range! We went immediately to take a look at the house. The first thing we did was go into the backyard. It was huge! I was sold! Unfortunately, that huge yard was nothing but a lot of dirt and nothing had been done to it, but I could see the potential. I really didn’t need to see the inside to know I wanted this house but my husband insisted we look. The inside was outdated and had very cheap finishes. The house had five bedrooms and a whooping seven bathrooms! Still I could see the potential this house had. My husband on the other hand needed some convincing. Luckily I convinced him and we got the house!

Here’s what the kitchen looked like before we renovated. Hello Orange!!

We closed on the house quickly and immediately got to work. Luckily for us I have many talented people in my family. My uncle and his son are two of the best contractors I know and they agreed to help us remodel our new house. Demo took about 7 days and I mean we demoed almost everything! By the end of day 7 we had removed the entire kitchen, laundry room, all the flooring, every bathroom including taking one bathroom out completely, remember I told you there were seven, and tore down a wall that divided the living room and kitchen.

Now we had renovated some houses in our past but nothing like this. I remember walking through the house after it had been destroyed, for a lack of better words, and having a wave of panic come over me. I thought what in the world had I done! How are we going to finish all this? We had just put our home we were living in on the market what if that sold fast, which it did! I really started to second guess myself on if this was the right decision for our family. It was a very scary feeling.

Well I had to push those fears aside and just get to work. The next six months my cousin, uncle and me lived and breathed the renovation of our home. It was very stressful and fun all at the same time. I loved that I got to pick out every detail of our new home. I even got to design my dream kitchen! My crazy talented cousin built all my cabinetry in the house. We made a great team. I designed it and he built it. It took a total of six months to complete the inside. Two of those months we unfortunately had to live in the house. Those were two long months! The above pic is what we lived in for two months! But worth it!

I was so excited about getting to design my dream kitchen! I decided to go bold with our backsplash and the barstools helped complete the kitchen. Cabinet color Simply White Benjamin Moore.

The first thing I said when we walked through the house was that the wall needed to come down!

Goodbye closed off space and hello open concept. Plus we added French doors in the living room which Brought in a ton of light. House Color Porous Stone Dunn Edwards

The before of the laundry room wasn’t very pretty and wasn’t very functional, but the after turned out wonderful if I do say so myself.

The cement tile we put in the laundry room just finished off the farmhouse feel I was wanting in this space. As did the shiplap and butcher block countertops. Wall color Simply White Benjamin Moore Cabinet color Cape May Cobblestone Benjamin Moore. And of course you need a washer and dyer.

We were able to add a little mudroom area in the laundry room as well. Its funny that we added so much more to this space but it feels twice as big as it did before. Numbered baskets were from Michaels.

The master bath had a HUGE bath tub that took up a big chunk of the bathroom. All the finishes were outdated and builder grade. We had to do a full gut in here to get the look I wanted.

We went with a classic timeless design the master bath. I stuck with neutrals and of course Carrera marble for the back splash. The icing on the cake was a free standing tub with a hand held shower head. Sink Faucets

The Guest bath looked just like all the bathrooms in the house. Outdated with builder grade finishes.

This was actually the space in the house we did the least renovation in. It’s amazing what some new Tile, paint, vanity and light can do.

My son’s bathroom we went a little bolder with this fun tile and floating vanity. I stuck with dark monochromatic colors for his “manly” bathroom. I added a shower curtain to add some softness to the space.

For my two daughter’s bathroom I went dark. I painted their vanity Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore, one of my all time favorite colors. We added a new Carrera top, sinks, brass faucets, brass lights, round mirrors and some fun pops of color.

This was the stair case. The carpet was so nasty and the spindles and Newell post were just outdated.

We kept the rail and replaced the balusters and built around the Newell post. So one day when someone goes to remove the stairs they will get a little surprise! Flooring maple French oak. Stair treads custom stain. Wall color Porous Stone Dunn Edwards. Wall Sconce

My oldest daughter’s room is my favorite room in the house. My cousin Tara hand painted her walls. It looks just like a wall paper I wanted for her room but it was out of budget. The lattice wainscoting turned out just like I hoped it would. Bench  Nightstands

In my son’s bedroom we added some shiplap for a fun little accent wall and painted his room Cape May Cobblestone by Benjamin Moore. I also got him a new iron bed Nightstands

In the loft space upstairs we added a home work area for the kids. This has been a great space for them to color and do crafts and play on the computer. Rug  Chairs.

In the dining room we added some board and batten and painted the walls Black Licorice by Vista Paint. I love how the dark wall color contrast with the white molding. We also did herringbone shiplap on the trey ceiling. And no dining room is complete without a chandelier

This is the den. We added a set of French doors into this room because originally the house only had one small door in the kitchen to get to the backyard. Adding additional doors was a must for the function of the home. Plus it added so much light. Coffee Table

We also added this large built in unit with a butcher block top. It gave me loads of storage for my pillows!! Don’t judge I already know I have a problem! Faux cow hide, Jute rug

In the powder room we did a little twist on the standard shiplap. I think spacing the planks out gives it a modern feel. Wall color Simply White Benjamin Moore. Cement tile

The master bedroom got new floors and paint. Wall color Porous Stone Dunn Edwards. Bed Nightstands

The guest room was another space that didn’t require much, thank goodness! Just some paint and flooring and of course a cute bed and juju hat. Wall color Porous Stone Dunn Edwards nightstand from Homegoods, pillows Homegoods. Similar Lamp

Well there you have it my first official blog post! I hope you enjoyed seeing a little more of my home and of the renovation that took place. We are loving life on a cul-de-sac and wouldn’t change a thing. I always tease my husband and tell him, “remember how you didn’t want buy this house?!” He laughs and says, “yes I remember.” Well from now on he better listen to me and never question me again lol! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you subscribe so you don’t miss anything.
